I cut my teeth in e-commerce at a tender age before I was 18. I grew up in Nashville at a time when there were probably 50 record stores throughout the city. Since Nashville is a massive music industry hub, record labels would ship loads of free promotional materials to all the record stores: cds, vinyl, posters, etc. And what made this stuff extra special was it couldn’t be found most anywhere else outside of Nashville. Every store kept a “free” box by their entrance that often set untouched, until one day when I had a light bulb moment.
With reckless-youth ambition and caffeine coursing through my veins, one Saturday morning I went to about a dozen record stores, loaded up whatever wasn’t taken by other fans, and listed the items on eBay. Before long, I had already built a small packing station in my bedroom, and my first unofficial (definitely unlicensed) business venture more than funded road trips and snacks for a few summers.
"More than anything else what most people want is fast and free shipping"
Throughout college and the years that followed, alongside a few other side hustles, I worked for various legitimate e-commerce companies, slowly learning what customers valued most. Here’s what I think it really comes down to, it’s simple really. More than anything else what most people want is fast and free shipping, pain-free returns, and someone who actually picks up the phone if they have a question. Other than actually offering a quality product, that’s the experience everyone wants and deserves when shopping online.
Since Walrus Oil's beginning, one goal has remained at the core of our values: deliver orders to almost anywhere in the Lower 48 within three days or less. Operating out of Missouri allowed us to accomplish that for most of the country, with the northeast being the one exception, where delivery times have typically averaged closer to four or five days.
This is where the new Portland, Maine fulfillment center comes in full clutch. By Spring 2027, not only will we be able to deliver to anywhere in the northeast in 1 to 2 days, but Canada deliveries (especially Quebec) will land 2 to 3 days sooner. And while we’re still working out some kinks, since Maine is the closest state geographically to Europe, we're already exploring more favorable shipping options to the UK and elsewhere. Lastly, the proximity of Portland, Maine being only 3.5 hrs from the Canada border opens the door to a possible future Canada fulfillment center.
The Portland, Maine move has been a closely guarded secret for nearly two years, and we’re incredibly excited to finally share it. While we didn’t originally plan to relocate our home office as well, it started making sense for a lot of other reasons, which we’ll unpack in another post.
"trust Walrus Oil to get you exactly what you need, when you need it"
At the end of the day, our aim is simple: when there’s a job that needs to get done, whether it’s refinishing a well-loved cutting board or putting the finishing touches on a furniture build for a client, you can trust Walrus Oil to get you exactly what you need, when you need it, even if it’s the last minute. That’s the power of fast delivery and why it will always matter. Once the Portland, Maine office officially opens, virtually anywhere in the contiguous United States, once your order ships, it will land in 3 days or less. Mission accomplished!
